Winds of p to 50 miles per hour, police said, causing concerns that trees and power lines could be felled, causing safety concerns for area residents.
“As always, 911 should be utilized in the event of an emergency,” the department said in an alert. “Residents are reminded of several important non-emergency numbers to utilize during weather-related incidents. For a non-emergency that requires a police response, call 631-852-COPS.”
The nor’easter is expected to hit late on Thursday, Oct. 10, bringing rain and gale-force winds through Friday, Oct. 11. The bulk of the storm is expected to hit Suffolk County, with much of Nassau County being spared from the brunt of the nor’easter.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued a statement urging New Yorkers to be prepared for "potentially dangerous high winds and coastal flooding throughout the course of this storm."
"Our state agencies and emergency management teams are prepared with personnel and equipment to assist communities as quickly and effectively as possible if they are needed."
Area residents who need to contact PSEG Long Island can do so by calling their customer service line at 1-800-436-7734, and outages can be reported by texting “OUT” to PSEGLI (773454).
According to police, the department will be adjusting staffing in the Communications Section as well as on the road. Vehicles from the Emergency Service Section will be deployed for rescues in addition to former military vehicles the department utilizes for flooded areas. Officers from our Marine Bureau will be deployed throughout the county to respond to water-related emergencies.
